此谚语用花中最美丽的玫瑰比喻一切美好的人、事与物,但它们终究也要逝去。正所谓Beauty fades and is gone。
十九世纪英国诗人与翻译家Edward FitzGerald在他译自波斯诗人Omar Khayyam原著的四行箴言诗有云:
Oh, come with old Khayyam, and leave the Wise
To talk, one thing is certain, that Life flies,
One thing is certain, and the Rest is Lies;
The Flower that once has blown for ever dies.
诗的意思是说,生命以及一切美好的东西永远会飞逝。
中国古典小说《水浒》中有一句俚语,“人无千日好,花无百日红。”唐初青年诗人王勃在他的名篇《滕王阁序》中也写道:“胜会不常,盛筵难再。”
