上教堂做礼拜的人很多,但他们中间有些貌似虔诚,其实未必能真心诚意接受教化做善事。本谚语用了否定的语气“All are not …”(意为“Not all are …”),来指出尽管大部分都是虔诚的信徒,但总有一小部分不是真心诚意的混在中间。推而广之,本谚语也可用以指某些团体中,尽管多数是好人,但在鱼龙混杂的情况下,总难免混进一些口是心非、假仁假义的伪君子。成语a Sunday saint就是指这些伪君子、只在礼拜天才充当善人的人。此谚语的句序也可改为:All that go to church are not saints.或用现代英语的说法:Not all that go to church are saints。
